R.E.M.の10枚目のスタジオ・アルバム『New Adventures in Hi-Fi』。R.E.M.にとって、1996年に発売されたこのアルバムは、翌年に満に脱退した創設メンバー、ビル・ベリーとの最後のスタジオ・レコーディングとなった。長年のプロデューサーであるスコット・リット(「グリーン」、「アウト・オブ・タイム」、「オートマチック・フォー・ザ・ピープル」、「モンスター」)との5回目のコラボレーションとして、このアルバムは、映画のようなイメージ、不協和音、心に残る効果に満ちた新しい音のテクスチャーを試みた作品。プラチナ・セールスを記録したこのタイトルには、シングル「Electrolite」、「E-Bow the Letter」(Patti Smithをフィーチャー)、「Bittersweet Me」が収録されており、R.E.M.のスタジオ作品としては最長の65分に及ぶ総収録時間となっている。本作はリリース当時全英アルバム・チャート1位、全米アルバム・チャート2位を獲得したが、カルト的な人気も博し、バンドメンバー自身がR.E.M.の記録したカタログの中で最も優れたアルバムの一つに挙げている。
